上篇談字幕翻譯要技：刪節原文
本篇續談另一技巧：補充原文
對白跟日常會話一樣
視乎對象、環境，會略去一些訊息
譯者須察言辨色
補述所指不明確的人、地、事
雖然每行字幕均有字數限制
但是原文易生歧義就一定要補充
例如某角色在不同場景
跟其他不同的劇中人說某相同事物
而對白只用代名詞
翻譯時可能須按情況重複一遍
看以下一段（斜杠顯示斷句處）：
It was a journey that would have seen them hopping from ice floe to ice floe,/ spearing food out at sea,/ huddling together to keep out the fierce cold.
試譯：
　人類遠祖沿着浮冰前進
　在海上用魚叉捕食
　依偎在一起驅寒取暖
原文是紀錄片，講述石器時代人類
從歐亞大陸遷往美洲大陸
第一句主語用 it，直譯不通
看過節目，知道原文在說誰的旅程
便得補充資料
補上主語後
也同時解決後面從句欠主語的問題
再看以下例子：
This is the story of a wave that is sinking ships around the world,/ a killer that defies all scientific understanding/ and that no ship is designed to withstand./
試譯：
　有一種浪曾導致全球多艘船隻沉沒
　這奪命巨浪連科學也無法解釋
　而且亦無船隻可以抵擋
原文說海洋中突然撲出的百呎巨浪
killer 譯「奪命巨浪」也屬補充
直譯「殺手」誇張而不直接
按節目題旨意譯，生動得多
再看下面一段：
In fact nothing was ever found to link Hanratty forensically to the murder./ Instead his arrest was the result of a strange and complex sequence of discoveries./ 24 hours after the car,/ Metropolitan Police found something else./ In the South London bus garage -- the murder weapon,/ a .38 Enfield revolver wrapped in a handkerchief/ and hidden along with five boxes of ammunition under the back seat of a 36A bus./ Three weeks later two spent cartridge cases were found/ in a Maida Vale dosshouse, the Vienna Hotel,/ and these matched the murder weapon./ Hanratty had stayed in the Vienna Hotel on the day before the murder./
試譯：
　事實上沒有證物證明他與此案有關
　他是因為連串離奇發現而被捕
　在發現失車24小時之後
　倫敦警方再有發現
　在南倫敦一個巴士廠發現兇器…
　一柄包在手帕內的點38左輪手槍…
　和五盒子彈藏在一輛巴士的後座下

　彈痕和兇器吻合
　而漢拉提在案發前一晚曾住該旅館
把 nothing 和 forensically 結合考慮
大而化之地譯成「證物」
讓依賴字幕的觀眾更明白內容
Metropolitan Police 可指任何都會警力
宜點明所指，譯「倫敦警方」
these 原指 two spent cartridge cases
但再譯「兩個空彈殼」累贅
擷取「空彈殼」之意
意譯「彈痕」更佳

翻譯戲劇時須補充說明的情況也多
在《老友記》中
Ross 和 Rachel 談床笫之歡
男問女可有跟人透露他們的性事
女方答道 Uh, honey, yeah that was with Carol
Carol 其實是 Ross 前妻
有追看該劇的該知道
光譯「前妻」不夠
Carol 跟 Ross 離婚
是因為她原來是同性戀的
為表達對白的諷刺意味，可譯…
有呀，就是你那同性戀前妻
由此可見，譯者須非常熟悉劇情
必要時補充臨場缺乏的資料
以協助觀眾理解劇情
再看一個來自《老友記》的例子
Chandler 和 Joey 是室友
但 Joey 討厭前者的新女友 Janice
於是 Janice 想跟 Joey 和好
提議兩人去看棒球賽
加深瞭解，好改善關係
Joey 回來後，Chandler 問他感受
Joey 說 Janice 討厭，但又說：
But, hey, look, you know the good thing is, is that we spent the whole day together/ and I survived,/ and what's even more amazing, so did she./ It was bat day at Shea Stadium./
試譯：
　但不算徒勞無功，至少相處了一天
　…我尚在人間！
　更神奇的是她也安然無恙
　看球賽送球套，竟沒用來掐死她
Shea Stadium 是紐約 Mets 隊主場館
bat day 即送球棒當紀念品
原文直譯「那天送球棒當紀念品」
實指「竟沒拿球棒打死她」
譯者須按劇情推敲，自行補充說明
我認為可再修訂一下
把「球棒打死」改為「球套掐死」
以更好表達 Joey 故作刻薄之意
也就是說，譯者可隨機應變
從而用文字得體地表達戲劇效果

總的來說
譯者須透徹理解節目內容
才能恰當補充
補充較刪節要求的技巧又高一些
